Wednesday's Rain Is Still Sitting in the Sump

Last week in Battle Creek started dry and warm, then turned wet in the middle. Monday and Tuesday stayed clear with highs in the low-to-mid 70s and lows in the mid-40s. Wednesday brought light rain and fog on a muggy 65/57 day. Thursday dumped the real water — Battle Creek airport logged roughly half an inch overnight into the morning, with more light rain through the day and gusts near 31 mph — while highs sat in the mid-70s and the overnight low stuck at 62. Friday cleared and cooled: a 66 high and a 43 low, the coldest reading of the week. Saturday and Sunday stayed mostly dry with highs near 72 and lows in the upper 40s. That midweek water does not leave with the radar. It sits in the crock, the floor drain, and against the foundation while Friday's cold night asks the furnace to run.

This is the week a sump that "usually works" fails after ordinary rain, not a Flood Watch. Lift the lid. If the crock is high, the float is stuck, the pump hums and will not push, or the discharge hose is kinked in the yard after Thursday's gusts, that is a wet basement, not a wait-until-next-storm problem. Standing water on the floor, a musty smell that was not there Tuesday, or a discharge that never reaches the grass are the tells. Call A.W. Crooks. We are 24/7 residential plumbing and HVAC in Battle Creek, and we do not add a weekend tax during hours. (269) 962-5441 or book at tctcinc.com/contact. Drain clearing is live on tctcinc.com/specials if the line is the choke point.

Same walk after a wet midweek that flipped cold: the water heater base and the furnace. An 8-to-12-year-old tank with a wet ring on the floor does not need another 43-degree night. The $99 water heater check is still on specials: flush, T&P, look at the tank and the floor. Not a new heater. Parts and repairs not included. Ten minutes on heat Friday or Saturday — walk to the unit for a clean start, no water on the floor, no burning-dust panic that will not quit. The Fall $99 furnace and $199 boiler tune-ups cover one system check. Repairs not included.

Thursday's 31-mph gusts and Wednesday's wind trip outdoor disconnects and breakers that will not reset. That is The Michigan Electric Company — residential and light commercial electrical, panels, and generators — same number.

If you are building or running commercial or new-construction plumbing, that is The Plumbing Company, not Crooks. Not 24/7. Same call center reaches all three: (269) 962-5441 · tctc@mitctc.com · tctcinc.com.
